We are GROW (Giving Real Options to Women), a 501c3 organization developed to serve the marginalized population of female inmates within the King County correctional system. It is GROW’s mission to reduce rates of recidivism among incarcerated women by fostering the self-determination and autonomy needed to break the cycles of violence and oppression shaping their lives. GROW has created an eight-week series of educational workshops specifically designed to address the exceptional needs of incarcerated women. Curriculum topics include the dynamics of domestic violence, personal empowerment, defining healthy boundaries, fostering life-affirming choices, encouraging self-advocacy, women’s heath education, and personal accountability. Due to the highly transient nature of the jail population, we have structured each two-hour workshop to be an independent, comprehensive session. In addition, the workshops are linked enabling women to expand on concepts from previous sessions. “When a tree grows by itself, it spreads out but does not grow tall. When trees grow together in the forest they help push each other up towards the sun” – Unknown
